I made the statement recently that much of social media seems to be about people sharing their “thoughts, thoughtlessly.” I then started to see a proliferation of posts about the lack of depth today in leaders and thinkers. Carey Neiuwhof addressed it in this blog post after the death of Eugene Peterson.
I love Gary Vaynerchuk too. He started it all with his philosophy, “document don’t create” when it comes to publishing on social media. For Gary, there is a depth of knowledge and experience that seems to be a bottomless well from which flows fresh ideas every day.
Not so with others. For others that don’t have the same knowledge and experience base, the advice has given way to people posting worn out quotes, videos of their workouts or worse, pictures of their food! One new “Instagram Influencer” lives with their parents works for their business and travels on their dime all while offering advice on being a successful entrepreneur!
I know it sounds like I’m being critical and maybe I am. There is no thought or little thought it seems.
What will make the difference? As always, the marketplace. People will eventually see through the person who, as my father used to say is, “a mile wide and an inch deep.”
Deep is better. Depth is where you find your tribe and more importantly yourself. It’s where you grow, change and become.
Deep takes time, training and trouble but it’s worth it.
Depth matters.
